About me

Hi, my name is Pedro. I have a PhD in Chemical Engineering from the University of Minnesota and I am currently a post-doctoral researcher in Rio de Janeiro. But up until my high school years, I used to hate math and science because I was convinced that I was bad at it. It all began to change when I finally met the right teacher, who showed me that science was awesome. His absolute passion for the subject really inspired me, and in a short period of time I started to see my grades improve. This teacher encouraged me to apply for college even though nobody in my family had ever done so. And today, I have published scientific papers, presented at scientific conferences, and mentored several college students. Most of my experience comes from academic research. But I have officially taught a few number of undergraduate and graduate level courses over the past 8 years. All the while, as a side job, I have tutored students in math, chemistry and physics, simply because I deeply enjoy these subjects. I believe the best approach to teaching science is through systematic exposure to solved examples with different strategies and practice problems. But I also believe that there are important emotional and psychological aspects that need to be taken into account for each student. Because while you work at those problems you will also need strong motivation and many difficult virtues such as patience, discipline, and perseverance. That's when the right teacher makes a huge difference! I am very passionate about applied mathematics and scientific modeling. It is my hope that you will not only overcome any challenges you may be currently facing with math and science but that you will also come to realize your own potential to pursue and achieve whatever you set your mind to.
