Herramientas asincrónicas en el aula virtual: son la mayoría dentro de un aula virtual, ellas permiten adaptar el aprendizaje según los ritmos de cada estudiante, en forma independiente del tiempo y del espacio. Las herramientas principales son: foro, actividades, evaluaciones y mensajería interna. También las noticias, pizarrón, materiales, preguntas frecuentes, información de la asignatura, calendario y contactos. Existen otras herramientas, algunas de ellas más sofisticadas, que no fueron pensadas para educación que pueden utilizarse, teniendo en cuenta que no formarán parte del aula virtual, como tal, sino que serán complementarias. Un caso es el e-mail, que muchas veces no forma parte del aula virtual pero suele utilizarse como alternativa ante ciertas circunstancias (plan B).
