Test your level of Italian

Are you not sure what your level of Italian is? We have designed this online Italian test based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) to help you identify your level. It consists of 20 multi-choice questions that only take 10 minutes. It is completely free of charge.

It consists of one part which measures your written and comprehension skills and an optional second part which is an oral test. The result of your Italian level test will show you where you are on the scale, from the most basic level, A1, to the most advanced, C2. If you are not sure what your level is, check it quickly:

Doing an Italian level test will help you in several ways: 

  • To set your next goals: Once you know your level, you can determine the next step you want to take. 
  • To measure your progress: You can take the Italian level test whenever you want to measure your progress. You can do it for free as often as you like. 
  • Find a suitable teacher: In line with the first point, the best way to learn Italian is with a online teacher. You will need to find a tutor aligned with your goals: if you want to give conversation classes, if you have to prepare for an official exam, if you want to pass the subject... 

 

Official certificates certifying your level of Italian language skills

Once you know which level you are on, you can move on to the next one. There are many official certifications that accredit your knowledge of the language. The most widely recognised and widespread are:

  • Certificazione della Lingua Italiana (CELI, Certification of Italian). The CELI is essential if you want to study or work in Italy, or to demonstrate in a company that you have the ability to speak this language. It is intended for adults in school and evaluates the competences and abilities in the use of the Italian language. It is essential for work and study. In addition to the traditional CELI certificates, CELI Immigrati (for immigrants) and CELI Adolescenti (for adolescents) are available. The European correspondence is as follows: 
  • Certificazione di Italiano come Lingua Straniera (CILS, Certification of Italian as a Foreign Language): the CILS, created by the University of Siena, certifies linguistic and communicative competencies in Italian as a second language. CILS certifications are recognized in the workplace as well as in education and universities. 
  • Accademia Italiana di Lingua (AIL, Italian Language Academy): AIL is an association of schools, institutions and national and international experts working in the field of certifications and Italian language teaching for foreigners. AIL certifications are internationally recognized and are aimed at people who have Italian as a second language. 

Take the Italian language test before you decide which certification you wish to apply for.
