Hey, I’m your Chemistry tutor. Let’s make this subject feel less like memorising random facts and more like figuring out how the world actually works at the smallest scale.
I’ve been teaching IGCSE, GCSE, and O-Level Chemistry for a while now, and the pattern is always the same: students don’t struggle because Chemistry is “too hard”. They struggle because it’s taught backwards. We get buried in definitions, equations, and test tricks before we ever stop to ask _why_ things behave the way they do. My job is to flip that.
Here’s how I run sessions. First, we build the picture. Chemistry is about atoms, electrons, and energy. Once you can visualise what’s happening when sodium hits water, or why bromine decolourises alkenes, the reactions stop being magic and start being predictable. I’ll use diagrams, analogies, and real examples so you’re not just writing “Baeyer’s reagent tests for unsaturation” - you’ll know it’s because KMnO₄ gets reduced by the double bond, and that’s why the purple disappears.
Second, we drill the exam side without making it painful. IGCSE and O-Level love testing patterns: qualitative analysis, gas tests, trend down a group, reaction mechanisms. I’ll show you the 20% of concepts that cover 80% of the marks. We’ll practice past paper questions together, and I’ll teach you how examiners think. That means learning to spot keywords, structure 6-mark answers, and avoid the common marks you lose for “missing state symbols” or “not being specific enough”.
Third, I keep it practical. If you’re stuck on organic mechanisms, we’ll draw them step by step until it clicks. If you hate calculations, we’ll break mole problems into a 3-step method that works every time. If you freeze in practicals, we’ll go through each test - flame test, oxyhydrogen test, halide test - and I’ll tell you exactly what to write and why.
I’m not here to talk down to you or throw jargon around. If you don’t get something, we stop and re-explain it a different way. My rule is: if you can explain it back to me in plain English, you own it. If you can’t, I haven’t taught it right yet.
What you can expect from me: clear explanations, no fluff, lots of past paper practice, and a focus on understanding over rote learning. I’ll also keep track of the topics you keep getting wrong and design quick drills so they stop being weak spots.
Chemistry rewards curiosity. Once you start seeing the logic behind periodicity, bonding, and reaction rates, it stops feeling like a wall of information and starts feeling like a toolkit. My goal is to get you to that point, and to get you the grade you need to move on to whatever you want next - A-Levels, IB, or just the confidence that you actually understand science.
So tell me where you’re stuck right now. Is it organic chem, moles, periodicity, or practicals? Give me a topic and a question you’re struggling with, and we’ll break it down together.
